What You Will Do

The Firefighter/Paramedic plays a crucial role in the emergency response of Carroll County Government. You will respond to emergency situations with calm, quick actions. We are looking for a strong understanding of EMS protocols capable of helping citizens and basic life support providers through crisis. Your day-to-day will include important decisions to balance medical needs, overtake challenges, and take critical actions to provide advanced life support, firefighting, and rescue.

Essential Duties

Administer and direct basic and advanced life support emergency medical care. Provide guidance and support to basic life support providers.
Respond to emergencies to render aide, extinguish fires and effect rescues.
Drive and operate emergency vehicles and fire suppression equipment safely and effectively.
Check inventory and maintain equipment, vehicle and medical supplies. Complete inspections to verify vehicles, tools and equipment are properly maintained.
Coordinate the creation and maintenance of pre-plans and area maps. Complete timely, detailed and accurate reports.
Participate in training, drills and other related activities.
Assist with administration of the on-duty shift. Complete daily fire/EMS station duties.
Invite collaboration and seek learning opportunities. Proactively assist peers to create a supportive work environment.
Exhibit integrity, ethics, and fiscal responsibility.
Ensure all work is complete and timely to support department goals. Evaluate feedback and procedures to improve efficiency.

High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
Validated Paramedic and fire service field experience
Licenses

Class C non-commercial driver’s license
Certifications

Cardiac Rescue Technician, Paramedic certification (Maryland) or National Registry (NREMT) Paramedic
Firefighter I certification by MFSPQB, Pro-Board, IFSAC, or DOD
Firefighter II certification by MFSPQB, Pro-Board, IFSAC, or DOD (or must obtain within 1 year of hire date)
Common Passenger Vehicle Technical Rescuer -Technician or Rescue Technician (site operations, vehicle, and machinery) certification by MFSPQB, Pro Board, IFSAC, or DOD (or must obtain within 1 year of hire date)
Emergency Vehicle Operator course (MFRI, VFIS, or equivalent)
NIMS 100, 200, 700, & 800
Additional Information

Must be able to safely perform the duties of the position without posing a threat to the health and safety of themselves and others.
24 on, 72 off schedule. Must be available for all shifts as assigned and on-call as needed.
Will be required to work outside of standard hours.
Facial hair must be maintained to properly wear job-specific safety equipment and pass SCBA fit test throughout employment.
Requires criminal background check as condition of employment.
Requires medical clearance consistent with NFPA 1582.
All applicants offered this position will be required to sign a nicotine abstinence agreement.
Employees shall be subject to alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing, including but not limited to random testing.
Must meet Carroll County Risk Management driver eligibility requirements.
Working Conditions

Will frequently be required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, and lift up to 25 lbs; and occasionally required to bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb ladders, reach above, at and below shoulder height, lift up to 100 lbs, and carry over 100 lbs.
May frequently be exposed to fumes, flammable items, sharp objects or rough edges, and loud noises; and occasionally work in temperatures below 40 degrees or greater than 80 degrees, work in confined spaces, and occasionally exposed to airborne particles, blood, bodily fluids or blood borne pathogens, toxic or corrosive chemicals, exposed electric wiring or components, or noxious odors.
Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
