POSITION: Carroll County Weed Control Coordinator
POSITION TYPE: Part-time, seasonal (mid-April/May through the end of October/early November)
JOB SUMMARY: Surveys the county to determine the degree of noxious weed infestations, initiates control practices and document activities.
JOB INFORMATION:
Carroll County in cooperation with Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking a motivated and organized Weed Control Coordinator. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working both indoors and outdoors, engaging with the public, and leading a small team to manage noxious weed control across the county.
The Weed Control Coordinator will manage and coordinate the Weed Control Program in Carroll County. The main responsibility of the coordinator is to survey, control the noxious weeds and ensure compliance with the Maryland Noxious Weed Law. Additional responsibilities include contact with the public (agricultural community, landowners and businesses) in an educational and regulatory capacity; as well as coordinating activities to provide a viable spray service.
Pay: $20 – $25 (based on qualifications and experience)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Survey the County for the presence of noxious weeds and maintain records of findings.
• Inspect properties to verify compliance with the Maryland Noxious Weed Control Law, document, notify landowners and/or tenants of noxious weed infestations and recommend measures suited for the individual noxious weed(s).
• Apply herbicides and maintain accurate records of treatments.
• Supervise and schedule work for Weed Control Technicians.
• Prepare reports, notices and correspondence in regard to inspections, investigations and control activities.
• Manage budget (track, monitor spending, reconcile, expense reporting)
• Maintain safe storage of herbicides and other materials assigned to the program.
• Perform general upkeep and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.
• Attend county committee and pesticide recertification meetings.
• Use mapping software (Quick Capture) to track treatment areas and/or google maps or other program to map infestations.
• Perform other related duties as required.
Job Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Minimum of 18 years of age.
2. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
3. Must obtain a MD State Pesticide Applicator’s license within 6-12 months of hire.
4. Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
1. Ability to work outdoors in various conditions, some physical activity required. Physical requirements include the ability to move/travel over any terrain to access inspection and treatment sites, to move/carry heavy objects (chemical containers, spraying equipment, etc.), to work with and around chemical substances and to work outside for extended period of time in any varying weather conditions.
2. Working knowledge for operating and maintaining herbicide spray equipment with ability to use in a safe and effective manner.
3. Strong verbal and written (English) communication skills including the ability to prepare necessary forms and reports and to explain weed control regulations to others.
4. Strong organizational skills.
5. Ability to work independently and as a team, complete assigned duties and, when needed, make appropriate decisions regarding deviation from original work plans.
6. Ability to effectively plan and supervise others.
7. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
8. Preference will be given for: practical farm experience; herbicide spraying experience, and
familiarity with MD State Noxious Weeds
