Job Description

This position is for CERTIFIED correctional officers who possess one of the following:

​• Maryland (MPCTC) Corrections Certified Applicants
– 1 to 23 months of CORRECTIONS EXPERIENCE

​• Out-of-State Corrections Certified Applicants
– 1 to 23 months of CORRECTIONS EXPERIENCE

​Candidates who possess Out-of-State corrections certification must have their certification evaluated by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) for Maryland equivalency. Completion of a corrections academy within one year of hire may be required for candidates possessing Out-of-State corrections certification.

​This position is responsible for full correctional duties, and reports directly to a 1st line supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Working knowledge of corrections laws
• Knowledge of modern principles, practices and procedures of correctional work
• Knowledge of legal powers of correctional officers
• Ability to follow oral and written directions; write routine reports and correspondence;
read technical literature; and calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and work within guidelines
• Ability to thoroughly understand and carry out oral and written instructions
• Ability to work equitably, tactfully and effectively with others
• Ability to deal cooperatively and fairly with the general public
• Ability to handle sensitive public contacts, communicating with tact and professionalism
• Ability to perform all correctional duties without restriction and complete all duties and
responsibilities as assigned
