What You Will Do
The Chief Building Inspector is responsible for leading building inspection staff and performing residential and commercial building and fire inspections in Carroll County. We are looking for an individual with experience in the construction field as well as building, fire and life safety code. You will apply your knowledge to new construction and renovated projects throughout the County and its municipalities. Your day-to-day will include important decisions to analyze construction, interpret and review plans, and verify compliance with codes adopted by Carroll County and the State Fire Marshall’s Office, keeping citizens safe.
Essential Duties
• Oversee the inspection of buildings for adherence to current regulations. The codes include Carroll County Building Code Ordinance, Maryland Accessibility Code, International Building Code, International Energy Code, International Residential Code, NFPA Life Safety Code, and NFPA Fire Prevention Code requirements.
• Perform inspections and compile reports as required by management or government agencies
• Provide training, coaching, and assistance to all inspection staff.
• Resolve code conflicts and provide alternative solutions while ensuring safety.
• Exhibit integrity, ethics, and fiscal responsibility.
• Implement standards through policies, procedures, and work schedules. Lead team training to reinforce integrity, ethics, and use of best practices.
• Encourage collaboration and support team members work and development through mentorship. Build and maintain a welcoming workplace.
• Maintain transparent communication to support flow of information in the organization.
• Lead team operation to meet standards set in Federal, State, and local laws. Partner with legal counsel to ensure policies, procedures, and practices follow applicable Carroll County ordinances.
• May perform additional duties in supervisor’s absence.

You Might Be a Good Fit If
Education and Experience
• High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
• Seven or more years of related experience
• Three or more years of supervisory experience or demonstrated ability to perform supervisory duties.
• A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.
Required Licenses and Certifications
• Valid driver’s license
• B1 International Residential Building Inspector certification
• B2 International Commercial Building Inspector certification

• May be required to work outside of standard hours.
Working Conditions
• Frequent exposure to potentially adverse weather conditions.
• Occasional exposure to potentially adverse environmental conditions, including, but not limited to, chemicals, noise, and airborne particles.
• Frequent physical activity: standing/walking, pushing/pulling, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying, climbing steps, squatting, stooping, and related activities.
• Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
