Job Description

The Church of the Ascension is looking for an enthusiastic part-time Music Director to lead our music ministry. Under the guidance of our Rector you will play a vital role in enriching our worship experience through diverse musical expressions.

Ascension values the transformative power of music in our spiritual lives. Our 10:15 am Sunday service, lasting approximately 1 to 1.15 hours, features a blend of traditional hymns, contemporary praise music, and choral anthems. We are blessed with an adult choir, a handbell choir, and a praise ensemble, all eager to grow in their musical ministry.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:
Proficiency in organ and/or piano performance.
Experience directing choirs and/or musical ensembles preferred.
Knowledge of liturgical music and the Anglican/Episcopal tradition preferred.
Ability to work with diverse musical styles, including traditional and contemporary.
Ability to work with amateur musicians of various levels of experience.

General Responsibilities:
Play and direct music for regular worship services at 10:15 am on Sunday and special liturgical events.
Train and  develop the adult choir and praise ensemble.
Select and arrange music that enhances worship and reflects the liturgical seasons.
Collaborate with the Rector in planning music for services, weddings, funerals, and special events.
Recruit and nurture the musical talents of our congregation.
Maintain the church’s musical instruments and music library.
Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for all musicians.

Time Commitment:
Sunday service: about 1.25 hours
Sunday rehearsal: 1 hour
Weekly rehearsal: 1.5 hours
Additional time for planning, special events, and administrative tasks.
