Fire Protection Specialist

What You Will Do
As the Fire Protection Specialist, you will conduct reviews of building plans to ensure compliance with codes, standards, and regulations related to fire protection. Reporting to the Director of Fire & Emergency Medical Services, you will review fire suppression systems and provide technical assistance to customers, recommending solutions. The work you do will support programs for life safety and fire protection.
Essential Duties
• Conduct reviews of building construction, subdivision, and site development plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations. Coordinate review process with applicable agencies.
• Perform review of residential sprinkler system, commercial fire alarm system, and other fire suppression system submittals to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations. Coordinate review process with applicable agencies.
• Perform review and analysis of the requirements for hazardous materials storage and use as part of the building construction plan review process.
• Coordinate certification process for adequate public facilities for emergency services with applicable agencies and volunteer fire departments.
• Coordinate and maintain various programs and initiatives for life safety and fire protection. Collect, analyze, and maintain data for required reports.
• Provide service and technical assistance to customers, including property owners, architects, builders, and developers. Address problems, provide information, make referrals, recommend solutions, and ensure appropriate follow through.
• Consult legal counsel to ensure policies, procedures, and practices comply with Federal, State, and local laws.
• Foster collaboration and provide learning opportunities. Facilitate a supportive work environment.
• Independently ensure all work is complete and timely to achieve department goals. Review work of others to ensure that organizational standards are met.

Job Requirements

You Might Be a Good Fit If
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field
• Three or more years of related experience
• A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.
Required Licenses and Certifications
• Valid driver’s license
• Firefighter II certification by MFSPQB, Pro Board, IFSAC, or DOD
• Certification as a Fire Inspector by MFSPQB, Pro Board, IFSAC or DOD
• Plans Examiner under NPFA standard 1031.
• NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) or equivalent (or must obtain within one year of employment)

• Requires criminal background check as condition of employment.
Working Conditions
• Occasional exposure to potentially adverse environmental conditions, including, but not limited to, chemicals, noise, and airborne particles.
• Occasional exposure to potentially adverse weather conditions.
• Occasional physical activity: standing/walking, pushing/pulling, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying, climbing steps, squatting, stooping, and related activities.
• Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
